Finding Your Muse through Movement

As a part of “Me-March” I joined a dance studio with Nia, Zumba, Belly dancing and other fun movement classes. I’m mostly addicted to Nia, and find there is something astounding that happens whenever I take a class.

The swaying movement and the freedom of the routines truly shift the energy out of my head and into my body. The space and the place where peace washes over me, almost sweeping me away into another world, and allows my muse comes out to play.

Both the movement and the music in Nia is a sensual experience. Doing Nia is  when I feel the most feminine, working in a mostly masculine-entrepreneurial role daily. Even though I may look awkward and goofy in the way I move my hands and head all over the place – like a child throwing a tantrum in a gentle slow motion, it feels beautiful to be able to move that way.

The instructor on Wednesday told us that Nia was created to help people find the joy in movement, I truly believe they have achieved their goal. I find no greater joy than moving in the way that Nia allows me to.

I highly suggest you check out a class, my favorite local instructor that I have taken so far is Kerstin (find out more about her here http://www.roweteach.com/Nia/Welcome.html). She’s amazing and you can feel her passion for Nia in her classes, which is contagious.

My friend, Jan Haas, and I have started some musings about putting together a “Muse & Movement” event in the fall of this year to help others experience the joy of play and movement that we ourselves are also playing with this year…stay tuned!

If you are outside of Denver, check out www.nianow.com for class information.
