5 Simple Steps to Activate Your Intuition

Are you looking for answers? Seeking guidance? Or do you simply desire clarity and perhaps a shorter route to your ultimate destination?

If so, then it’s time to activate your intuition.

Years ago, intuition wasn’t a skill that was often admired or utilized, especially in the business world, but recent studies have shown that even corporate executives now base decisions and actions simply on their intuitive thoughts.

Intuition is simply an inner knowing. Some people may refer to this as receiving information from another source, perhaps even messages from a higher power, while others will refer to this as their own inner knowledge expressing itself into thought.

Regardless of what you call it, intuition often… [Read more...]

Making a Habit Out of Setting Boundaries

Boundaries have always been an issue for me. I want to give. I want to serve, and I often find myself overextending that offer. Giving too much. Allowing things, obligations and even people to take over.

When this happens, it’s a prime example of other people driving my life, instead of me being in the driver’s seat.

Over the last few weeks I was experiencing a lot of frustration. When I stopped, reflected, and got honest about what I was feeling, I realized I was the problem.

I hadn’t set clear boundaries. I was open and willing to let go of what was important to me for the sake of others. Ultimately, my spirit was wounded by this. It was fighting back. It was showing me that something was off, not right, and out of balance.

My frustration was a warning sign, the same way a smoke detector goes off when you are frying bacon in the kitchen. It isn’t a fire, but it could be. And the only way to turn off the alarm is to fan away the smoke and clear out the air. [Read more...]

Cultivating a Sense of Courage

A few months ago I woke up to an awareness about myself. I didn’t “wake-up” to this in the morning, I woke up to this when I realized I was feeling stagnant.

The awareness: I had completely fallen into a comfort zone.

A comfort zone is a place or state of being, whereby life is “easy,” comfortable, things are moving along pretty smoothly. But in reality, it’s stagnant. Nothing major is happening. There isn’t anything to push you into higher growth, everything just… is.

Comfort. It feels good. It’s nice. Safe. Warm.

But dangerous.

It’s the place where dreams are deferred, plans are postponed, and life is in the lead. It’s going with the flow and you don’t even know where the flow is going.

So, how does one break their comfort zone rut?

Courage.

Courage by definition is doing something that frightens you. Now, I don’t think you need to sky dive or heli-ski or include any other apparatus that sits high above the ground.

But, I do think we have to ask ourself, What is the biggest, baddest, scariest thing I could do today? Wait for an answer, and then do it.

Courage is about foregoing the little baby steps and leaping to a path of your higher calling.

Courage is defining what you want – and then initiating the biggest payoff activity you can.

Simply put, courage is going for it. No. Matter. What.

So I ask, can we cultivate the courage to pursue our dreams? Or will we find ourselves stuck in the cushions of comfort?

Like everything else in life, courage is a choice.

The choice is yours (and mine too!).

How are you being courageous? Share in the comments below.

Being Grounded in Rituals, Traditions, and Community

Whether we are aware of it or not, traditions, rituals and community play a large role in our lives and livelihood.

On the Winter Solstice, my friend Jan Haas mentioned her family getting together to celebrate the day. I said to her, “You really could teach me a thing or two about rituals and traditions.”

Over the following days, I realized that was what I missed most about being home for the holidays: Christmas Eve at my parents, eating too many cookies, watching my nephews rip open their gifts, visiting both sets of grandmothers on Christmas Day, seeing cousins who I haven’t seen all year, and so on. Where Does the Time Go?

Time. It seems to pass so quickly. Like a thief that comes into the night and steals it from under us.

Is it because we are almost always living in the past or the future? Or is time really just an illusion?

Regardless of the answer, there is one thief I have noticed.

The yeses.

The yeses to people, to my to-do list, to obligations, to household chores. The yeses that keep me from being in the moment. The yeses that keep me filled with constant busyness.

I have found myself saying “no” more, as I’ve discovered the no is the yes to my soul. I’ve had to muster up the courage to turn down opportunities, commitments, meetings, and figure out what’s really essential.

Saying no, I’ve realized, is an expression of speaking my truth. It’s about standing up for myself when something doesn’t feel right, when something seems off, or maybe I just need to do a little nothing.

Haven’t you ever noticed how hours can pass by without even noticing, but if you are really doing nothing and being mindful of time, it’ll slow down. You’ll look at the clock and say, “Wow, it’s only been ten minutes.” It’s like the time you are waiting at the doctor’s office, sitting in traffic. These are the minutes we feel and experience – but why- because we are rushed to continue on with the hustle, bustle and busyness that our culture demands?

The thief of time is our yeses. It is how we give away the most precious thing we have in this life. And I need not remind how short and precious life really is. No matter how you are, you look back and say, “How have I been around all these years already?”

Time is precious. Cherish it, every single moment.

Make a habit of saying no.

And say YES to yourself, it’s a yes to your soul!
